Application Overview
Thank you for your interest in serving on the Dyslexia Working Group established within the Colorado Department of Education. As a part of this online application, all applicants will be asked to upload a letter of interest. Applicants applying to fill a professional role will be asked to upload a current resume. CDE is seeking to fill the following position to serve on the group:
  • A state or national literacy expert
Background Information
During the 2019 legislative session, the Colorado General Assembly passed House Bill 19-1134, Identification and Interventions for Students with Dyslexia. The bill created a working group appointed by the Commissioner of Education to analyze state and national data and practices concerning identification and support of students with dyslexia. The working group has been in place since the fall of 2019. More information can be found on the working group webpage.

The specific charge of the group includes:
  • Recommending dyslexia screening tools and processes
  • Developing a statewide plan for identifying and supporting students with dyslexia
  • Recommending educator training in recognizing and providing interventions for students with dyslexia
The working group must submit annual reports of its recommendations to the Commissioner, and the Commissioner must submit the report to the State Board of Education and the education committees of the General Assembly.

The bill also established a pilot program to assist local education providers in using READ Act assessments to screen for dyslexia and in providing interventions for students who are identified as having dyslexia. More information can be found on the pilot program webpage.
Meeting Dates and Locations
In order to be selected, members of the working group must commit to attend all meetings. Please expect to attend three full group meetings throughout the year, with additional smaller subgroup work required outside those meetings. The whole working group typically meets in person from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The smaller working subgroup meetings are scheduled according to the needs of the members and additional tasks required to complete work. Please visit the working group webpage to review current and past meeting information. Specific meeting dates for the 2024-25 school year have been set. Future dates for the 2025-2026 school year will be confirmed late spring/summer.
