This year’s APM Conference theme is Projects for a Better Future and will focus on sustainability in project management through the lenses of people, innovation and practice. We aim to discuss the urgent need for the project profession to adapt and innovate in response to the climate crisis, exploring internal and external factors, skills and strategies.

This is your chance to contribute to this conversation.

We welcome suggestions for conference sessions that provide thought leadership, education, insight, real-world examples and/or practical guidance on any of the topics below. In addition we also welcome ideas for session topics that are not included below, but fall within the overarching theme of sustainability in project management and one of the main sub-themes of People, Innovation and Practice as detailed below.

People
– What does the ideal sustainable workforce look like in the project profession? This could include:
  • Knowledge, skills and competencies that empower teams to adopt sustainable practices
  • Sustainable education structures (apprenticeships, qualifications)
  • Future workforce structure – global mobility, hybrid/flexible working
  • Equality, equity, diversity and inclusion and its role in the sustainable workforce

Innovation – what’s new and what’s needed for sustainable project delivery?
  • Emergence of regenerative practices
  • Use of AI and data to improve sustainable outcomes whilst also considering environmental impact of using energy-hungry AI
  • Assessing the sustainability practices of supply chains
  • New technology to deliver projects more sustainably
  • New materials to reduce carbon footprints
  • Innovative project delivery methods e.g. modularisation
  • Inclusive design to ensure projects leave a legacy for future society
Practice – How can organisations integrate sustainability into their project management practices to ensure project resilience and success? What can organisations do to meet the need for more impactful action on climate change?
  • Managing project stakeholder sustainability expectations (including the challenge of the value engineering process)
  • Unlocking the potential of project sponsors as the key to sustainable PM
  • Sustainability strategies that work – how to embed sustainability into an organisation’s strategic frameworks and project life cycle
