INTRODUCTION

The provision of aquatic facilities, programs and services is extremely important for the community of Cairns. On this basis, Cairns Regional Council (Council) has identified the need to develop the Cairns Aquatic Facilities Strategy (the Strategy), and have engaged Otium Planning Group to do so. The Strategy will consider the role, impact, opportunities and implications of aquatic facilities. For the purpose of the Strategy, aquatic facilities include:
  • Council-owned aquatic centres: - Babinda Pool - Smithfield Pool/ Marlin Coast Bicentennial Pool - Tobruk Memorial Pool - Gordonvale Aquatic Centre - Woree Sports and Aquatic Centre.
  • School and private aquatic facilities
  • Sugarworld Adventure Water Park
  • Cairns Esplanade Lagoon and Muddy’s Playground
  • Natural bathing reserves and patrolled beaches.
Further to this study, Council has engaged Royal Life Saving Australia to develop a Risk Management Plan for the Cairns Region's inland waterways. Inland waterways in this context refers to rivers, creeks, waterholes, water falls, lakes and dams in publicly-accessible areas within the Cairns Region.

Feedback from the community is essential to identifying the future aquatic facility needs of the Cairns Region. Please support the Strategy by completing this survey by 5pm, Monday 29th of July 2024.
