Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to complete our survey!

Laytonsville is revising the 2014 Comprehensive Plan. The Laytonsville Planning Commission is charged with preparing the new plan. We hope to issue a revised plan in September 2025. To help us prepare the plan that best represents the interests and objectives of the town residents, the Town and Planning Commission are undertaking a public engagement program to solicit input from town residents. The Comprehensive Plan will help to guide the Town’s growth and development for the next 10-20 years. The first step in the public engagement process is to ask the Town’s community members to tell us what type of place they would like it to be.

Who Should Respond: Every town resident over the age of 18, non-resident business/property owners, and non-resident property owners. This is your opportunity to have your say on the future of Laytonsville.

The Town of Laytonsville last approved a Comprehensive Plan ten years ago. The purpose of the plan update is to define a new set of goals and objectives for the Town’s future character and provide guidance for specific land-use decisions to be implemented through the Town’s Zoning and Subdivision ordinances.

The 2014 plan is organized in 12 sections, in conformance with State of Maryland’s 12 planning visions:
• Quality of Life and Sustainability
• Public Participation
• Growth Areas
• Community Design
• Infrastructure
• Transportation
• Housing
• Economic Development
• Environmental Protection
• Resource Conservation
• Stewardship
• Implementation

The revised plan will address these 12 visions.

To help the Town and Planning Commission create the right plan, we are asking you to respond to several questions. This survey is modeled after similar questionnaires developed in other communities to understand the will of their constituents. Several questions directly ask what you would like (or not like) as amenities within the Town. These responses will help the Planning Commission shape the plan. The utility of other questions may not be so evident. These questions ask what part of town you live in, whether you own or rent, whether you work in the town and live elsewhere, your approximate age, and more. It is very important to us to collect this information, as well as your thoughts on amenities and preferences, to understand the range of opinions of residents, as well as how these opinions vary throughout the community. The Town treats all opinions and responses equally and no one demographic or individual response will be treated any different than another.

For example, if you said you wanted a more walkable community, how that could be interpreted could depend on where you live. In the Mobley Farm area, where there are few sidewalks and trails, this desire may reflect that neighborhood residents want more sidewalks on Sundown Road. Whereas, if you live near the Shopping Center and the historic district, it could be interpreted to mean you want safer access across MD 108. The information we collect from this survey will help us shape the plan.

Once community input data is collected and analyzed, the Town will publish the results of the survey and make it available to the public. Please do not include any personally identifiable data in your responses.
Please return your completed survey by December 19, 2024. it can be completed online or submitted in person or by mail to: Town Clerk, Laytonsville Town Hall, 21607 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville, MD 20882.
