Fishpool Street Residents' Association
Traffic Management – Opinion Survey

The Fishpool Street Residents’ Association (FSRA) is asking for your opinion on new traffic management measures we're suggesting to reduce nuisance traffic on our street.

Your answers will be submitted anonymously to Herts County Council to form part of the public consultation being proposed for the permanent pedestrianisation of George Street and Marketplace once the current Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Your views can help shape the future – please take 2 minutes to complete this survey.
1.George Street and Market Place

George Street and Market Place should remain as permanent pedestrian areas, with direct vehicle access for deliveries restricted to specific off-peak times.
2.Junction of Verulam Road and High Street

A new loading bay and drop-off/pick-up area should be created at the junction of Verulam Road and High Street, to be used by pupils of St Albans School and for deliveries to local businesses.
3.High Street

High Street should remain a pedestrianised area for most of each day. However, to make the drop-off/pick-up area at the junction of Verulam Road and High Street work in practice, licensed vehicles only (including school buses) should be allowed through High Street at specific peak times, using controlled access such as rising bollards at both ends of High Street.
4.Romeland parking

The coach loading bay in Romeland should be replaced by 24-hour residents’ parking.
5.Fishpool Street one-way system

To reduce the use of Spicer Street and Fishpool Street as a “rat run”, the central section of Fishpool Street should be made one-way from east to west. This would reduce congestion along the Manor wall but allow two-way access to St Michael’s Manor, the Lower Red Lion and Aquis Court.
6.Weight restrictions

Vehicle weight restrictions should be imposed on the narrow streets in the Conservation Area, with HGVs (such as waste collection trucks) requiring licences to enter.
7.20mph enforcement

A 20mph speed limit should be introduced throughout the city centre and should be robustly enforced.
