Thornton’s Park and Open Space system (POS) is no accident. It is the result of thoughtful planning that articulates a shared vision of our parks, trails and natural resources. This vision was last captured in our 2017 master plan.

A new POS Plan effort is underway! This effort targets a refresh and 20-year vision to update the City’s long-range plan and inspire the community with next-level transformative elements for our park system. A supplemental 5-year Strategic Implementation Plan is included in this effort and will direct our immediate 2-5 year needs following adoption.

Key Goals
1) Develop a new community-driven mission and vision for Thornton’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Programs

2) Address the following key topics:
–The need for quality parks, recreation facilities and program services clearly expressed by community members;
–The ability to serve a growing population and a more diverse demographic;
–Matters of conservation and environmental impact;
Visually and functionally memorable public gathering spaces; and
–Diverse funding opportunities for elements of both the long-
and short- range plans

3) Re-shape the Parks and Recreation internal Department culture to be more engaging, creative and collaborative

4) Create a 20-year Comp Plan; and 2-5 year Strategic Implementation Plan
