Judge afac1a Question Title * 1. What is your Prolific ID? Question Title * 2. Which comes closest to your view? A history of discrimination has had effects on black and Hispanic Americans that have persisted into the present day. But rather than do what feels right, we need to do what works to make things right. Racial quotas and preferences have a number of problems. First, they require employers to discriminate against Asians and whites, treating them unequally in order meet affirmative action targets. This breeds resentment. Second, quotas make people suspicious of black and Hispanic workers or students who have truly earned their right to a spot. Finally, quotas can mismatch people to universities or jobs, leading them to fail when they would have been better off at an institution or job that is better suited to them. Thus a law or medical student who would have succeeded at a good university and pursued a lucrative career in law or medicine winds up being admitted to an Ivy League school but switches to a softer subject, damaging their self-esteem and career prospects compared to what they would have been without affirmative action. As a country, America needs to make good on the promise of equality to its black and brown fellow citizens. Affirmative action is a cornerstone of that promise: ensuring that we work to counter the multi-generational impact of systemic racism and discrimination. This means we should insist on nothing less than a proportional representation of black and Hispanic Americans in employment and contracting. This can be achieved through setting concrete goals and timetables for achieving equality. Unsure Question Title * 3.
