An exploratory survey of attributes and characteristics of people with anorexia nervosa

Who we are: Hello, my name is Alea Strasser. I am a senior (grade 12) student at the Bronx High School of Science. Partnering with the Mailman School of Public Health we are conducting a survey on eating disorders, specifically Anorexia Nervosa.
What will be done You are invited to take part in a short survey about Anorexia Nervosa. Using a series of photographs of individuals, you will be asked to answer a series of questions related to the person in the photograph. Questions range from the individual’s age, and race to what you believe their likelihood of having anorexia nervosa is. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete

Purpose of the survey: We are asking you to take a few minutes of your time to improve understanding of people’s understanding and awareness of anorexia nervosa, including current knowledge and perception of the illness. We aim to increase understanding of anorexia nervosa amongst people who use social media and online social networks (e.g. Instagram, Facebook, twitter) Your feedback will contribute to understanding of public perception of this condition and inform possible development of educational materials and curriculum relating to anorexia nervosa and eating disorders more generally.

Voluntary participation: Your participation is completely voluntary. If you choose not to participate, you will not be affected in any way. You can choose to stop the survey at any time without any consequences or concerns. If you choose to complete the survey, you may skip any questions that you do not wish to answer. Please note that there is information and links to available resources on anorexia nervosa at the end of the survey, you can access this whether you complete or choose not to complete the survey.

Confidentiality: This is an anonymous survey and you are not required to put your name on any part of the survey. Your anonymous responses will be stored electronically in a secure environment and used for research or academic purposes now or later in ways that will not reveal who you are. All future use of any stored data will be subject to further Research Ethics Committee review and approval.

Potential Benefits and Risks: Potential benefits of participating in this survey include increased insight and understanding of anorexia nervosa. We acknowledge that some people may themselves have anorexia or know someone with anorexia. This may cause you to feel discomfort or unease. Treatment and resources are available and links to credible resources can be found at the end of the survey. This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards (IRB) of Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
