Criteria & Content

The Environmental Excellence Award is IECA’s highest distinction, recognizing exceptional stormwater and erosion and sediment control projects, programs, or operations that exemplify outstanding natural resource conservation and environmental protection. Winners will have demonstrated significant environmental benefits by clearly outlining their objectives, methods, results, and the positive impacts on the environment. The recipient must be an active IECA member and attend the 2025 IECA Annual Conference and Expo.

Judging Criteria
  • Environmental Conservation and Protection (25 points): Does the project, program, or operation demonstrate excellence in conserving natural resources and protecting the environment through effective stormwater practices and erosion/sediment control?
  • Innovation and Methodology (15 points): Does the entry showcase the use of existing methodologies, scientific design, unique approaches, or a combination thereof to maximize performance?
  • Model for Future Efforts (10 points): Does the entry serve as a model for similar initiatives?
A total of 50 points is available. Nominations must achieve at least 50% of the points in each criterion and 75% of the overall points to qualify for an award. Additional points are awarded for the number of years as an IECA member.

Mandatory Content

Summary of the Entry (Maximum 400 words): Provide a concise summary of the entry.
  • Project Details (Maximum 400 words): Describe the location, start and completion dates (if applicable), major parties involved, and any other individuals or organizations that should be acknowledged.
  • Distinctive Features (Maximum 800 words): Detail the distinctive features, special accomplishments, challenges, and other unique aspects of the entry that meet the award criteria.
  • Contribution to the Environment (Maximum 400 words): Explain how the entry benefits the environment, community, and the stormwater and erosion control industry.
  • References: Include two references from individuals knowledgeable about, but not involved in, the project. References cannot be from an employee or family member of the nominee. Awards committee representatives may contact the references during the review process.

Optional Content

Nominators may include optional content to highlight the attributes of the entry and support the nomination. Optional content is an opportunity to "make the case" for the award.
  • If less than 500 words, submit optional content in the provided field.
  • For additional content (references, letters of recommendation, photos, etc.), email files to membership@ieca.org. Format optional content to facilitate electronic distribution and review. If possible, compile optional materials into a single file or provide a clear summary of separate files. Optional content should not exceed 5 pages and may or may not be reviewed by the Awards committee.
