The Melissa Institute CEU Request

In the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic, individuals experienced a number of serious and enduring losses including the loss of lives, financial losses, and changes in ways of life. In addition, there has been a marked increase in violence toward oneself (increased suicide rate), toward others (increased family and street violence), and marked increased in substance abuse. In spite these challenging consequences, most individuals, families and communities evidence resilience, or the ability to “bounce back” and meet the challenges of ongoing adversities.

In this presentation, Dr Meichenbaum will discuss what distinguishes the approximately 75% of individuals who evidence such resilience vs. the 25% who develop a variety of stress-related disorders. He will discuss ways to bolster resilience across the life-span from high-risk children and their families, to various high-risk adolescent groups such as victims of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), LGBTQ youth and victims of Human trafficking.

For adults, he will consider ways to bolster resilience in individuals who experience prolonged and complicated grief and traumatic bereavement, as well as ways to bolster resilience in the elderly and among trauma therapists and health care providers.
