The Scholarships Committee promotes and administers the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) research scholarships, fellowships, and awards.
Goals of the Scholarships Committee:

The Scholarships Committee promotes and administers the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) research scholarships, fellowships, and awards.
Goals of the Scholarships Committee:
- Supervise domestic research scholarships, fellowships, and awards
- Encourage presentations by awardees at Clinical Congress
- Track the careers of awardees over time
Membership Requirements
Members must be Fellows, Associate Fellows, or Resident Members who are previous scholars of the American College of Surgeons in good standing
Membership Expectations
- Review grant applications for the following awards and submit the reviews by the requested due date
- Attend scholarship committee study section meetings to present your reviews of the grant applications listed above. These sessions are run similar to an NIH study section meeting, but are much shorter (typically 1-1.5 hours)
- During the ACS Clinical Congress:
- Attend annual Scholarships Committee Business Meeting (1.5 hours) on Monday
- Attend annual Faculty Scholar Presentations (Clowes, Faculty Research, Claude Organ, and Nizar Oweida) (1.5 hours) on Monday (immediately follows business meeting)
- Attend the Resident Research Scholarship presentations (1.5 hours) on Tuesday during “Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum Dedication, Excellence in Research, and Resident Research Scholarship” session from 8:00-9:30am
- Review and approve (via email) scholars suggested by other ACS entities
- Disclose and maintain active COI within 1 week of request
- Review potential ad hoc grant/fellowship applications, as requested.
Term
A member is eligible to serve one 3-year term. Upon evaluation and assessment of meeting the membership, participation requirements, and needs of the Committee, a member may receive an extension of their membership for an additional term of 3 years. This membership extension is at the review and discretion of the IRC Executive Committee. An additional term is not guaranteed.
