Understanding Gender and Safety at Workplace: Media and Entertainment Industry
UNDP B+HR Asia has contracted Gender at Work Consulting (GWCL) to undertake a study on the effectiveness of responses to sexual harassment at the workplace (SHW) faced by persons engaged in the media and entertainment sector in Asia. Established in 2016, GWCL is a social enterprise based in India, that works on promoting gender equality within organizations, sectors and programmes. GWCL operates in collaboration with women's rights organizations, civil society, trade unions, businesses, and research institutions. Among other collaborations, we've also partnered with UNI MEI, the division of UNI representing workers in the media, entertainment, and arts (staff, freelance, independent, and contract workers). This partnership strengthens our research efforts in Asian countries.
Sexual harassment within the media and entertainment industry has been a longstanding issue that has gained significant attention in recent years. The MeToo movement, which gained momentum in 2017, highlighted the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault across industries in particular in the media and entertainment sector. Globally, it sparked a wave of public disclosures, creating pressure for industry reforms, greater accountability, and improved mechanisms for reporting and addressing incidents of SHW.
This survey aims to collect responses from individuals working in the media and entertainment sectors across Asia, with a particular focus on those who identify as women. The purpose of this survey is to gather information about the types of sexual harassment and workplace discrimination faced in the media and entertainment industries, as well as to assess the effectiveness of responses to such issues. The findings from the survey will inform recommendations aimed at creating a safer, more inclusive, and gender-equitable environment within the media and entertainment sector.
