Smithfield Foods is dedicated to helping communities through targeted philanthropy, employee volunteerism and efforts such as scholarships that make a difference in real lives. Their focus is on three things – hunger relief, education, and veterans, where great strides through corporate giving and employee involvement have been made. The Smithfield Scholars program is another opportunity fulfill their education initiative.
Smithfield Scholars
The Smithfield Scholars Program will provide support for high school seniors who have been accepted into a historically black college/ university. The scholar’s program is competitively based and will provide selected scholars a $5,000 scholarship to a historical black college and university of their choice. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the school for fall 2022 semester. Recipients of the scholarship are required to major in a food, agriculture, animal science, natural resources, or a STEM-related field. As recipients of the scholarship, these students should join their local collegiate MANRRS chapter or in absence of a chapter, join as an independent student member.


Smithfield Scholars Guidelines (Deadline- February 1st):
1. Must be a U.S. citizen
2. Must be a high school senior
3. Must be accepted into HBCU
4. 2.8 GPA or higher
5. Interest in agriculture, food sciences, natural resources, or related disciplines
6. Demonstrate leadership and community service
7. Complete the Smithfield Scholars Application form
    -Personal statement up to 500 words max focusing on one of the following:
        a). How I envision the scholarship will impact me personally 
        b). My experiences and perceptions about STEM/agriculture
        c). Explain a time when you faced adversity
   -Academic Transcript
   -Must have 2 letters of Recommendation (1 from teacher and 1 from school counselor)
