Thank you for participating in this important three-minute survey!
Since the pandemic, Connecticut towns have reported an increase in motor vehicle crashes caused by speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Durham is no exception. According to the UConn CT Crash Data Repository, from January 2021 to July 2024 there were 398 crashes in Durham involving 965 people, with 3 fatalities.
The Durham Complete Streets Committee is assisting the Board of Selectmen in seeking your input on the possible use of Automated Traffic Enforcement Safety Devices (ATESDs), commonly referred to as speed and red-light cameras. Local and state police face challenges with staffing and in-person traffic enforcement, making automated systems a valuable tool.
ATESDs reduce dangerous driving behaviors by issuing warnings or fines. Studies show that speed cameras reduce collisions by up to 37% and red-light cameras are effective in decreasing crashes. The Federal Highway Administration approves both devices as proven crash countermeasures. Concerns about the cameras include privacy and the potential for inequitable deployment. Thus, the CT law approving the use of speed and red-light cameras includes guidelines for camera placement.
Your feedback will help Durham understand how residents feel about these measures and ensure that any decisions prioritize community values and safety. This survey will guide future discussions and policies regarding traffic safety in our town. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and contributing to the future safety of our roads!
