ASL 202 Course Objectives

1. demonstrate (receptively and expressively) basic ASL vocabulary and grammatical structure sufficient to carry on a brief conversation with Deaf signers of ASL in terms of:
a) exchanging personal information about nationality, family heritage, and world nations.
b) describing and identifying objects from various visual perspectives by their size, shape, surface pattern, texture, function, and construction.
c) describing seasonal/weekend/other activities, giving opinions about those activities, and talking about when plans have been disrupted.
d) telling personal narratives.
2. demonstrate advanced intermediate expressive fingerspelling and numbering skills.
3. demonstrate advanced intermediate skills in reading/understanding fingerspelled words and numbers.
4. demonstrate an understanding of Deaf culture, the linguistics of ASL, and how ASL differs from signed systems of communication based on spoken English.
