Upgrade of "unsafe" Fifteenth Avenue

To the Speaker and Members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly:

The undersigned petitioners ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to urgently:
  • Prepare and release a multi-year staging plan for the upgrade of Fifteenth Avenue to provide reliable and safe access between Cowpasture Road, Austral and the Aerotropolis
  • Fully fund the implementation of this plan
  • As part of the plan, fill a missing link in Western Sydney’s public transport network by improving the frequency and directness of Liverpool to WSIA bus services.
Fifteenth Avenue is the most direct road connecting Liverpool to the site of the new Western Sydney International Airport (WSIA) and adjacent Aerotropolis. The road runs through Austral, the Liverpool Local Government Area’s fastest-growing suburb, where the development of residential precincts is supplying much-needed new housing for south-western Sydney. Fifteenth Avenue is also relied on by the people of Middleton Grange and West Hoxton to access schools, jobs, train services and other daily needs.

While parallel routes to WSIA, including Bringelly Road and Elizabeth Drive, have been or are being upgraded, Fifteenth Avenue is not fit for purpose. It provides one lane in each direction, resulting in drivers, delivery vehicles and bus passengers being caught up in extreme traffic delays. These lead to peak period waits of 40 minutes for road users to travel 300 metres. The community needs this fixed now.

Fifteenth Avenue has been designated as the route for a critically needed rapid bus service between Liverpool and WSIA. Yet the $50 million allocated by the Government to the corridor represents one-tenth of what is required to bring it to an acceptable standard for existing and future users.
