Let's break down the SurveyMonkey main Privacy Notice so it’s easier to understand. Think of it like this:

When you use SurveyMonkey, you're either a Creator (the person who makes a survey), a Respondent (the person who takes a survey), or a Visitor (someone just browsing their website). SurveyMonkey collects different data about each group.

If you have taken a survey that was created by SurveyMonkey and not one of our customers you can review our Research Privacy Notice here.

This Privacy Notice is about "Personal Data." This is anything that can be used to identify you. Here's what SurveyMonkey collects:

If you make surveys (a Creator):

  • Your name, email, username, and password
  • Information about your computer or phone (what device you’re using, the IP address)
  • How you use the website and services (when you log in, what features you use)
  • Voice recordings, uploaded documents, or written prompts you use to create surveys
  • Payment information if you buy something
  • Recordings of emails or calls you make to our Customer Support team

If you answer surveys (a Respondent):

  • Your answers to survey questions
  • Sometimes your email (if the survey maker asks for it)
  • Basic information about your device (what device you’re using, the IP address)
  • Your general location ( what city you're in, but not exactly where)

If you just visit the website (a Visitor):

  • Information about how you use the website and any forms you fill out on our site
  • What pages you look at
  • What device you're using

For survey creators:

  • To run your account and provide the service (including providing Customer Support when requested)
  • To fix problems and make the service better (including understanding how our customers are using the services)
  • To send you helpful information about other features that may be helpful to you and updates
  • To make sure you’re not breaking any rules when you use our products and services
  • To personalize the service to you based on how you are using it

For people answering surveys:

  • To show your answers to the person who made the survey
  • To make sure you don't take the same survey twice
  • To improve how services work
  • To make sure you’re not breaking any rules when you use our products and services
  • The person who created the survey gets to see your answers
  • SurveyMonkey employees who need to see it to do their jobs
  • Companies that help SurveyMonkey run their service (see our list of subprocessors here)
  • Law enforcement bodies, if the law requires us to share it

SurveyMonkey doesn't share your information with other people unless it's for a specific reason.

  • With your organization: If you're part of a group account, the main administrator can see your information and the surveys you create.
  • With other companies that help us: We use other companies to help us with things like sending emails, processing payments, and even running our AI features.
  • For legal reasons: If a law or government agency asks for your data, we might have to share it. We also share it to prevent fraud or illegal activity.
  • If the company or any of its property is sold: If SurveyMonkey or any property it owns is bought by another company, your information might be part of the sale.
  • If you create surveys: As long as you have an account. You can delete your own account anytime if you have an account with us
  • If you have a free account and don't use it for a long time, we might delete it

Cookies are small files saved on your device when you visit websites.

  • SurveyMonkey uses cookies to:
    • Help the website work
    • Remember your settings
    • See how people use the site

You can turn off some cookies through our Cookie Banner or delete cookies in your browser settings.

  • For kids: SurveyMonkey's services are not for people under the age of 16, unless specifically authorized. You are not allowed to have an account if you are under this age or collect information from other kids under this age. If you do, SurveyMonkey may delete it. A parent or school can also contact us (at the address below) to have the information deleted.
  • Your rights: You have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, ask the person who collected your data to fix any mistakes, and even ask them to delete it.
  • Who is in charge of your data? If you took a survey from someone else, that person (the Creator) is in charge of your answers, not SurveyMonkey. You have to contact the Creator to ask for your answers to be changed or deleted.
    • But if you gave information directly to SurveyMonkey (like for a research survey), we are in charge of it. More details of how we handle data in that case can be found in our Research Privacy Notice.
  • SurveyMonkey might update these rules sometimes. We will post the changes on our website and might send you an email about big changes.
  • Want more in-depth info? Check out our Region Specific Privacy Notice (for US users), and Cookie Notice for more details.
  • Our Privacy Promise: The surveys, forms, applications, questionnaires, and all the answers you collect using our service are private. The only exception is if you intentionally share them publicly using a public link, which would make them searchable online. We will not sell your individual responses to anyone. We only use them to provide, build and improve our services, as explained in our full Terms of Use and Privacy Notice.
