CNBC|SurveyMonkey Your Money Poll August 2023

Personal finance is the source of a lot of stress for Americans, but not everyone experiences it to the same degree. Learn more in the latest poll from CNBC Your Money and SurveyMonkey. This survey was fielded among more than 4,000 adults in the U.S. from August 21-25, 2023.

Key findings

  • 74% of Americans say they are stressed about their personal finances these days, with 37% describing themselves as “very stressed”
  • A majority of Americans (61%) consider themselves to be “living paycheck to paycheck,” up very slightly from 58% in March of this year
  • 61% of people say inflation contributes to their financial stress, ticking up two points from March and holding the top spot as the primary financial stressor
  • Homeowners feel significantly less financial stress than those who do not own a home
  • 27% of mortgage-holders have a sub-3% mortgage rate; 88% have a rate lower than the current average for a new mortgage
  • President Joe Biden’s overall approval rating remains underwater (41% approve, 56% disapprove), but even fewer people approve of how he is helping with their own personal finances (36% approve, 60% disapprove)
    • Among Blacks, 64% approve of the job Biden is doing as president but just 52% approve of how he is helping with their own personal finances
