Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: philanthropy

Axios|SurveyMonkey poll: philanthropy

On Giving Tuesday 2019, results from a new Axios|SurveyMonkey poll show widespread agreement among Americans that businesses should do more to give back to charitable causes. Key findings include:

  • An overwhelming majority of people in the U.S. (86%) say it’s important for major companies to make financial contributions to charities.
  • Intensity of that opinion increases drastically by age: 44% of Gen Z (under age 23) say it’s "very important" for businesses to give to charity, rising all the way to 62% among those in the Silent and Greatest Generations (age 74+) who say this is "very important."
  • Employees across the board want to work at organizations that give back in some way—71% of workers age 18 and older in the U.S. say it’s important to them to work for a company that is involved in social causes and charitable organizations that they value.
  • Additionally, 69% of workers say it’s important to work for a company that offers paid time off to volunteer for causes and charities that matter to them. In this case, millennials are slightly more likely than anyone else to say they want paid time off from work to volunteer.
  • Among workers:
    • 55% have volunteered their time to social causes or charities in the last 12 months
    • 72% have donated money to social causes or charities in the last 12 months
