Dual Language Documentary Lab: July-August 2024 workshop
Over 5 weeks, learn to use cameras, lighting, and sound to tell a story of family heritage, women’s empowerment, or the importance of mental health as teenagers. All workshops will be in Spanish and English. A stipend is provided to participants in the Lab. Applicants must be 15-20 years old. Applicants will be interviewed before entering the program, as we have limited spots.

Summer Supported Lab: July 2024 workshop
The Summer Lab is an experimental filmmaking program that provides community, support, and resources for neurodivergent NYC students as they explore storytelling through filmmaking. Students will use cameras and mobile devices, as well as professional editing software to explore storytelling and make their own short films!

Career Lab: July-August 2024 workshop
The Career Lab is a summer program for high school students passionate about making media their career. This program offers workshops, panels, and visits to media companies, providing participants with an opportunity to gain insight into the media industry and meet industry professionals. It also offers a paid internship during the program.

Documentary Filmmaking: 7-month workshop | Fall 2024
The Documentary Lab is an intensive, after-school filmmaking workshop offered to high school students in NYC. This is a free introductory course to documentary filmmaking and no previous filmmaking experience is necessary. Students will be paired 1:1 with a professional filmmaker mentor to plan, shoot, edit and present a short personal film about their lives and communities. The course culminates in a special screening of student works. Applicants will be interviewed before entering the program, as we have limited spots.

Narrative Filmmaking: 9-month workshop | Fall 2024
The Narrative Lab is a program that will equip you with advanced skills in screenwriting, producing, editing, cinematography, and sound. During this program, you will produce short narrative films that are written, directed, produced, and edited by you! Applicants will be interviewed before entering the program, as we have limited spots.

Narrative Fellows Filmmaking: 9-month workshop | Fall 2024
Reel Works Fellows is an intensive training program for talented young artists to specialize in a filmmaking discipline and build a portfolio for college and career success. Fellows choose one craft: Screenwriting, Directing, Producing, Cinematography, Sound, or Editing. They are then paired with a professional mentor to deepen their practice while collaborating to create original short films. Applicants will be interviewed before entering the program, as we have limited spots.

Film School Fridays
Sharpen your editing, cinematography, storytelling, screenwriting, sound, and lighting skills with tutoring from peers and professionals.
Learn tips, tricks, and secrets for submitting your films to film festivals & how to apply for internship opportunities. No application is needed to attend, just RSVP before the event.

Master Classes: bi-monthly drop-in
Reel Works Master Classes connect young filmmakers with preeminent creators and craftspeople in the entertainment industry. Launched in the spring of 2020 in partnership with The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Reel Works Master Classes create a live, interactive virtual classroom where students can learn about the craft of film storytelling and how leading actors, directors, producers, writers, editors, and craftspeople discovered their passion and got their start. No application is needed to attend, just RSVP before the event.

Peer Mentors: Supported Labs, Dual Language Doc Lab, Documentary Lab, Narrative Lab
Reel Works hires graduates from the Labs to support the Summer Experimental Filmmaking Lab and Documentary Lab students in completing their films. We ask that Peer Mentors model the Reel Works values, rules, and policies, and among other things, community building when supporting peers.
