The R&A together with all National Governing Bodies (NGB's) are promoting several initiatives to make our game more enjoyable and increase participation. We would like your contribution to help us understand how these initiatives are working.
Martin Slumbers made his point at the All Parliamentary Group on Golf.
“All the research shows that we are time poor and that weekends need to be about the family. The other way of looking at this is, can clubs adapt their structure to be more family friendly? This could mean early tee times, family times, nine hole events, junior coaching and children friendly areas. But more importantly, are families welcome or simply tolerated?.
At its best, the club environment can be fantastic with a friendly atmosphere, good facilities and introductory membership offers. At worst is can be intimidating, masculine, unwelcoming environment. I am amazed how many have no free Wi-Fi or restrictions around internet usage.
In the UK women make up 14% of membership, whereas on the continent it is nearer 30% and often higher. Research has shown that in the UK there are an estimated 8.5 million people interested in taking up golf. 4.2 million of when are aged 15-39 and 3.8 million who are females aged 18-64. This level of opportunity, if realised, could make a significant difference.
Worldwide 41% of women golfers have children who play golf; 59% of the children play with the female golfing parent or as a family and only 18% with the other parent. The proposition is clear; attract the female parent and you will attract the children, too.
At the R&A we are completely committed to increasing the number of women who work in golf and who play golf.
