This short survey is open to any cultural heritage institution with a preservation program (library, archive, museum, historical society, etc.) interested in participating in the collection, analysis, and publication of general preservation statistics.

Background: The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) ceased collection of preservation statistics in 2008. The ARL Board referred further discussion of preservation in its broadest context to the Transforming Research Libraries Steering Committee; at present a working group of that committee is discussing the stewardship responsibilities of research libraries and the future shape of collections.

At previous meetings of the American Library Association (ALA), discussions by Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) members indicated great interest in continued collection, analysis, and publication of preservation statistics.

Review previous editions of ARL Preservation Statistics.

The Future:
The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), in conjunction with PARS, is interested in assuring that preservation statistics be collected and shared. Most libraries and archives still record preservation statistics for annual reporting purposes within their own institutions and consortiums. The loss of this shared data leaves the preservation community without a way to assess and analyze its collective current practices, staff and budget resources, and strategic direction.
