PEPFAR Stewarship and Oversight Act |
We are writing to urge your support for Senate bill 1545, the PEPFAR Stewardship and Oversight Act of 2013. As clinicians and scientists who have confronted the epidemic on its frontlines, I applaud this bipartisan effort. With provisions that ensure ongoing funding for treatment, prevention and care, this legislation promises a continued investment in evidence-based action to defeat disease.
Since its inception, PEPFAR has helped prevent more than a million babies from being born with HIV and has nearly reached its current target of placing 6 million people on treatment, saving millions of lives. The legislation recognizes the returns brought by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
This legislation, if enacted in law, promises continued U.S. leadership to combat the world’s three leading infectious disease killers. Moreover, a focus on measurable gains from targeted HIV interventions furthers hope that with broad support and ongoing commitment, the historic effort that began a decade ago will lead to an AIDS-free generation.
