Letter from ESICM Board

This message is sent on behalf of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), the European Board of Intensive Care Medicine (EBICM) and the Multi –Disciplinary Joint Committee for Training in Intensive Care Medicine (MJCICM).

In order to increase the profile of our specialty we have been lobbying the European Commission in order to try and get Intensive Care Medicine recognized in the EU Directive 2005/36 on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications. We believe that recognition of our specialty at this level will have significant advantages that will inevitably allow us to improve the overall safety and quality of care provided to patients throughout Europe.

One of the issues that has been raised by the Commission is the lack of any basic data pertaining to the need and demand of our specialty for specialist doctors in Europe. We want therefore to develop a data set that encompasses all 27 EU member states and that describes both the number of specialist (and training) doctors working in our specialty and also the number of individual cases whereby lack of recognition of a doctors professional status has hindered their movement across a national border. Article 10 of the EU Directive 2005/36 governs how recognition of professional status is granted between countries when the specialty in concern is not granted specialty status in the Annex V of that Directive. This is known as the ‘general’ form of recognition.

We need to provide up to date information regarding the status of Intensive Care Medicine in Hospitals, as well as the type of specialization of professionals working in ICU.

We are requesting your help in developing this data set. By answering to this questionnaire you can give a great contribution for this project!

Each participant in this survey will be entered into a draw to have the opportunity to win an Ipad.

With kindest regards

Yours sincerely
