Card sorting - varying the technique |
This survey is for my book on card sorting, and asks about how you've used card sorting in a way that may be different to the standard technique.
There are 7 simple questions, and I estimate that the survey will take you about 5 minutes to complete.
I will share summarised results from this survey on the book's website and mostly likely in the book itself; I'll let you know when they are available. I won't share your name or any other personal information.
Questions with a * are required.
I'm interested in how people vary the 'standard' open card sorting technique. Before I ask about that, here's what I consider to be some elements of the <emphasis>standard technique</emphasis>:
- The card sort is conducted for a website, intranet or other content-based design project
- Cards are drawn from a subset of existing content or a brainstormed set of future content
- Participants (usually users) are provided with a set of cards listing titles of content from the site
- Participants may work in groups or individually
- The card sort may be conducted face-to-face or with a software tool
- Participants create groups with the cards that make sense to them
- After creating the groups, participants describe (with a simple label) what each group represents
- You discuss why participants created groups in the way they did
Minor variations include:
- Participants can ignore cards, add extra cards or put cards in more than one place
- Cards may have extra information such as descriptions or images
