Over the summer of 2024, the road to the summit of Skinner Butte Park was closed to vehicles due to instances of illicit activity that caused or had the potential to cause a fire. During that time, the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division received feedback from community members who felt the summit became safer with the closure and requested the summit remain limited to people walking and rolling to the top via the main road or the two easy walking trails.

Parks is now considering closing Skinner Butte Summit Road to motorized vehicles each week from Tuesday to Saturday, and reopening it each Sunday and Monday.

This proposed schedule is in response both to recent public feedback, as well as ongoing daytime and nighttime instances of illicit activity often stemming from people who arrive in motorized vehicles. This behavior has been present for years and includes smoking, drinking, drug sales, vandalism, and fire.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on this proposal. Your responses are completely anonymous, and we will share the final survey results with the public.
