U.S. 101/Holly Street Interchange and Pedestrian Overcrossing
The City of San Carlos is applying for grant funding through the San Mateo Transportation Authority's Measure W to construct a pedestrian overcrossing and interchange improvements on Holly Street at US 101.
Currently, Holly Street at US 101 includes a full cloverleaf interchange consisting of four loop entry and exit ramps (as seen in the image above). With the help of funding from Measure W, the new project will remove the northeast and southwest loop ramps from the existing full cloverleaf. Removing these two ramps will create space for the construction of a new pedestrian and bicyclist overcrossing.
The proposed improvements to the interchange will allow the Holly Street and 101 area to better handle future increases in traffic and help prevent congestion. A new overcrossing, located away from vehicle traffic, will improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety. These improvements, especially the new overcrossing is a key part of developing a safer and more connected system of pedestrian and bicyclist amenities throughout San Carlos.
This project is many years in the making, with the original project study report being approved in 2013. Over $15 million in Measure A funding from San Mateo County was awarded to this project, as well as an additional $1 million from a Metropolitan Transportation Commission grant. While the City of San Carlos has committed to providing $9 million for the implementation of this project, there is still a funding gap of over $15 million. Securing additional funding through Measure W will close the gap and allow this project to finally be completed.
