Introduction

Poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK. People who live in city centres and near busy roads are the most likely to be exposed to dangerous levels of air pollution. Long-term exposure to this kind of pollution reduces life expectancy, mainly through cardiovascular and respiratory conditions and lung cancer.

In areas where measured air pollution is above national air quality objectives, local authorities are legally required to declare Air Quality Management Areas.

In 2013, South Kesteven District Council created an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) for Grantham. Covering an area in the town centre along Manthorpe Road and Wharf Road and including High Street and London Road, it is illustrated on the map below:

Grantham Air Quality Management Area

<span style="font-size: 8pt;"><strong>Grantham Air Quality Management Area</strong></span>
The AQMA illustrated above was created in 2013 and remains in place today due to levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution that, although not currently in breach of national targets, remain close. The national Air Quality Strategy objectives set two targets for NO2 pollution, meaning continued levels above that target are in breach. These include:
  • Annual mean NO2 concentrations – not to exceed 40 µg/m3
  • 1 hour mean NO2 concentrations – not to exceed 200 µg/m3 more than 18 times a year
The high levels of NO2 pollution in Grantham town centre are mainly attributable to road transport emissions, with cars being the main source.

We would like to know how much you know about the current Air Quality Management Area in Grantham. We would also be interested to find out what you think can be done to address poor air quality across South Kesteven and what actions and/or behaviours you support to help mitigate this. Your feedback will ensure our Air Quality Action Plan (which sits under the Air Quality Management Area and sets out how we plan to reduce concentrations of air pollutants across our district) is fit for purpose. Please spare us a few minutes to complete this survey.

Thank you.
