About YIMBY

YIMBY (Yes, In My Backyard) is a community-run backyard composting project based in Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria. The YIMBY team and keen local gardeners are working, with the support of Community Bank Maldon and District, to establish a trial of community composting here in Maldon.


How YIMBY works:

  • The YIMBY team provides training to willing composters in a continuous hot composting method.
  • Composters connect with their neighbours
  • Neighbours contribute food scraps in a bucket that is provided
  • Buckets are collected weekly and replaced with a clean one
  • Compost is made by adding locally sourced carbon-rich materials
  • The high-quality compost produced is used to grow food and improve soil in backyards.


YIMBY is a project of The Hub Foundation, a not-for-profit based in Castlemaine with a long history of supporting local action on climate and empowering community-led action.
