Overview: The Alpharetta Grow-A Row Program supports and encourages members of the community to grow and harvest organic produce at the Old Rucker Farm to donate to North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC).
The Alpharetta Grow-A Row Program is a coordinated effort in a collective growing space, with training, scheduled planting and harvest days, and weekly delivery of fresh produce to NFCC, making this collaborative agriculture effort impactful for those needing a little extra support.
Why Should I Help: Members in our community need help now more than ever. Providing food is the first line of defense when a person is struggling financially, and access to fresh, nourishing food at the NFCC food pantry frees up money to pay rent, utilities, transportation, or an unexpected expense. Each day, 100 families shop the food pantry at NFCC. With your support of the Grow-A-Row program, more families will be able to have fresh vegetables on their plates.
How It Works: Participants of this annual Grow-A-Row Program, running from Mar 1 - Dec 15, will be assigned a 36’ planting row at the Old Rucker Farm. All seeds and seedlings will be provided by the Program, and drip irrigation is installed in each row to handle the daily watering needs of the plants.
The Grow-A-Row Program will host an orientation at the beginning of the season to assign rows and get everyone familiar with the farm and the Program. Throughout the season, the Program team will send out weekly reminders and weather alerts to keep everyone growing together and on schedule.
Grow-A-Row volunteers will be expected to plant, weed, mulch, amend, fertilize, and harvest their assigned row on a weekly basis. The time commitment for Grow-A-Row volunteers varies throughout the season, but will range from 5-10 hours per week.
The Program will create a private Facebook group for all Grow-A-Row participants to aide in communication and collaboration, and will also use email and text messaging to stay in contact.
Each Friday during the harvest season, the Grow-A-Row Program will host a collective harvest from 8:00-10:00 am. This harvest will be weighed and then delivered to NFCC by 10:30 am.
The Alpharetta Grow-A-Row Program will report monthly and annually on the total pounds of fresh food donated to NFCC.
