City of Tecumseh - Downtown Streetscape Concepts

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Keeps the existing street layout but improves sidewalks with decorative pavers, rain gardens, and textured pavement to calm traffic and enhance appearance. The goal is to make downtown safer, greener, and more inviting for pedestrians.


Concept 2: Shifts the north curb to add space for a wider sidewalk with colored pavers, movable planters, and flexible areas for seating or events. The goal is to create a more active, walkable, and social downtown environment.

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Improves the existing market area with new pavers and hard surfaces that can be used for parking, events, or gathering, along with an upgraded intersection at Logan/Evans and a public restroom at the northeast corner. The goal is to create a more functional and accessible space with multi-use lawns for events, an ADA-accessible train platform, and paved parking to the east.

Concept 2: Upgrades the Market with a mix of pavers and hard surfaces that extend into a mid-block pedestrian crossing, improving connectivity across Evans Street. The goal is to create a welcoming focal point with public art or a fountain, a small lawn that can be used for various activities, and convenient paved parking.

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Transforms the rear entrances of downtown businesses into a dedicated pedestrian space with pavers, landscaping, and limited vehicle access. The goal is to create a welcoming plaza-style area that supports outdoor seating, gathering, and shared use.

Concept 2: Widens sidewalks along Chicago Boulevard by removing on-street bike lanes to provide more space for pedestrians and outdoor activity. The goal is to strengthen the main street experience while maintaining existing rear parking areas with potential façade improvements.

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Uses the rear pedestrian area to create space for outdoor dining behind the buildings. The goal is to activate the back entrances and create a more private, relaxed dining environment.

Concept 2: Expands outdoor dining along the front of businesses by widening the sidewalks and enhancing the pedestrian corridor. The goal is to create a lively, street-facing dining experience that adds energy to downtown.

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Uses distinctive scoring or patterns in the concrete to create a more pedestrian-friendly sidewalk. The goal is to highlight building entrances and add subtle design detail without changing materials.

Concept 2: Incorporates concrete pavers in varying colors to define the main pedestrian corridor and add visual interest along the sidewalk. The goal is to create a more vibrant and engaging walking experience downtown.

Description of each concept:

Concept 1: Features low planting beds with trees and vegetation that help capture and filter rainwater. The goal is to create a greener streetscape with evenly spaced plantings and regular openings for pedestrian crossings and on-street parking access.

Concept 2: Uses tree grates and grouped plantings to keep the curb area adaptable for different uses, with open access for pedestrians and on-street parking. The goal is to bring color and seasonal interest downtown with large movable planters that can be rearranged for events or maintenance needs.
