Common Questions and Tips for Skip Logic

| By reading these four common problems and solutions about skip logic, it will be much easier to design your skip logic! |

| Why doesn't the logic work after the respondent answers the question? |
|
Related Question | When respondents answer questions with Skip Logic on them, they do not skip to the questions further down the page! |
Logic Principles Skip Logic skips pages, NOT questions. One answer in one question corresponds to one page in Skip Logic.
Skip Logic triggers when a respondent clicks the button at the bottom of a survey page.
The Skip set for the answer option does not work unless the page is submitted with the button. This is why we strongly recommend that the Skip Logic question should be the last question on a page for a more effective logic sequence.
Solution Due to these principles, you must divide your questions into at least 3 pages so that Skip Logic can redirect respondents to follow up questions. You cannot redirect respondents to different questions within the same page. |

| Can I set the survey so respondents direct to different pages based on their answers to multiple questions or responses? |
| |
|
Related Question | I have a multiple choice (multiple answer) question or two different questions on my page with Skip Logic set on them. When a respondent answers both questions and click “next,” they only go to ONLY ONE of the skip pages that I specified instead of BOTH! |
Logic Principles Logic is a One to One relationship. If you choose the "Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)" question type and apply Logic on more than one answer choice, a respondent selecting multiple answer choices can only be skipped to one of those skip pages. The Logic skips based on the first answer choice selected.
You should not have multiple questions with Skip Logic on the same page because of this. We strongly advise users to place skip logic questions on their own separate pages.
Solution Set only one question and make sure there is only one skip option per page. The Multiple Choice (One Answer) question type is ideal for this. Use the Advanced Skip Logic tutorial to learn how to set up more complex Skip Logic maps that may better fit your navigational needs. |

| Why does the survey skip to a page with responses? |
|
|
Related Question | When respondents click "Next" they go to a previous page where they have already filled out responses! Why? |
Logic Principles Every survey form has only ONE submission per page. When a respondent skips back to a page they have already filled out, they can only over-write their original response, NOT submit a new response.
If you set your Skip Logic to skip to a previous page in the survey, you are “looping” the survey. Respondents will be returning to a page that they have already filled out.
Solution Always set the Skip so that respondents are only allowed to move forward in the survey. If you need for respondents to fill out the same question multiple times, create a copy of that page and paste it into the survey multiple times. Please refer to the Advanced Skip Logic tutorial to learn how to set up more complex Skip Logic maps that may fit your set-up needs better. |

| Why are respondents skipped to the wrong page after answering questions applicable to first skip? |
|
|
Related Question | I used Skip Logic to skip my respondents to a follow-up page, but after that, they go to the page I wanted them to Skip over in the first place! |
Logic Principles The survey naturally progresses to the next survey page if logic has not been applied. A page without question or page Skip Logic automatically defaults to the next page set up in the Design. When you skip respondents ‘off’ the main survey order into a Skip page, you must redirect them back to the appropriate point in the survey.
Example: You can use Skip Logic to send all respondents who answered “No” on page 1, question 1 to page 3. Afterward, if you do not want the respondent to default to page 4 after filling out their Skip page, set up another Page or Question Skip Logic to have them Skip to page 5. Solution Use either Question Logic or Page Logic to direct the respondents path. Without Skip set up, the respondents will default to the next page in order. |

| End of Survey in All Logic Scenarios: |
| |
|
All respondents must end on the same page. You must route all respondents to the same last page of your survey where they will all click the same Done or Submit button regardless of what skip path you have set for them.
Please note: If you have added a Thank You page in your collector settings this will not be the "end" page you can jump respondents to.
Click to see 'Two End Pages' map example
- The end page will be the actual last page of the survey design.
- Therefore, you may need to create one generic final page to the survey design. Then when the respondent clicks the Done button on that generic end page, the Thank You page created for the collector will open.
