Globally change Theme Properties throughout your survey:
  • Survey Font & Background
  • Survey Title
  • Page Titles
  • Page Description
  • Question Headings
  • Question Choices/Rows
  • Progress Bar to display respondents' progress
  • Exit Link
  • Asterisk for Required Questions, and
  • Error Text displayed when a question is not answered
Note: Changing any theme editing feature updates your entire survey design or theme by section or property. For consistency, the elements are changed throughout the survey and apply to all surveys formatted with that theme.

How to Create a Custom Theme:

To open the Theme editor, click the [New Theme] button and modify the properties. After you've created a custom theme it is listed in the Them drop-down menu to use for future surveys. The [Edit Theme] button allows you to change the themes you've already customized.
Note: Because changes made to an existing theme change all of the surveys in your account with that theme applied, please change the current Theme Name to create a new custom Theme in your account if you do not want the new theme properties applied to surveys you've already created.

two  Modify Theme Properties

The theme editing feature changes your entire survey design or theme by section. For consistency, the elements are changed throughout the survey. However, you may apply unique editing for parts of the survey with HTML Coding. For example, it is possible to change the bold option for questions specifically (Can I add HTML?). To do so, you must first disable the default bold setting for question headings. After disabling the automatic bold feature, you could then manually use HTML coding.

three Advanced Survey Design using HTML

Theme Editor

To modify specific elements or words in a theme; bold, underlined, or italicized, you may need to disable the default settings within the Theme editor first. After which, the changes you make with HTML will show in your survey.

  • To activate this, login to your account and click the [My Account] tab.
  • Under the Preferences section, click the [Edit] button and click [Enable HTML].
  • To turn it off, simply click the [Disable HTML] button.

Note:  It is necessary to have experience in HTML coding. You MUST CLOSE all HTML tags for the surveys to work correctly!

Adding HTML to a question strips the automatic formatting. It is necessary to enter all all line breaks and paragraphs manually if you use HTML coding. You must also CLOSE all HTML tags for the surveys to work correctly!

four  How can I omit the text requirement in the question field?

Instead of entering question text that displays, you may use HTML code to omit question text.

When doing so, the text does not display as illustrated in this example survey using HTML coding.

Here's how:

Create the appearance of a question with a text box for entry on the same line by using HTML coding for the question text of the Multiple Textboxes question type. Then, just enter the question as the row or input box choices.

 Example Question Text:
 <html>
Input Box Choices (each choice on separate lines)
 Do you like peanut butter?
This example would format the question in this way:
Do you like peanut butter?  ______________

Common Questions Common Questions

Question:
Can I bold specific words?
Support Answer:

Yes, but first your must disable any automatic bold formating that may be set for the question within the theme.

Disable automatic bold options for questions in Theme by following these steps:

  1. Click [New Theme] and choose the property to edit. (By default, all questions are bold in survey themes.)
  2. Click "Question Headings" to open the Question Headings editor.
  3. Uncheck the "bold" option.
  4. Click [Update Theme]  to save the new Theme settings.

Set specific words as bold:

Use HTML coding for the questions, or text selections you wish to bold. For example, if you would like only the word "example" bold use the bold open and close tags: <b> start bold and </b> stop bold

Code for making the word example bold in this line of text: To make the word <b> example </b> bold.  --> To make the word example bold.

Question:
What happened to my theme? I transfered the survey I created to my client, but the theme is gone!
Support Answer:
CUSTOM THEMES DO NOT TRANSFER!  Custom themes work only in your account. You cannot transfer a theme from one account to another. If you create a survey and theme within your account and then transfer or copy the survey , the theme will not transfer to the second account.
Question:
Can I remove SurveyMonkey.com from my survey?
Support Answer:

Professional accounts do not include any branding. If you upgrade your account to the professional or paid account, the branding is removed from all of your surveys automatically.
